The Vancouver Park Board has approved a smoking ban in the city's parks and beaches effective September 1, 2010. As a result of a unanimous vote at their public meeting last night, Commissioners will seek amendments to the Parks Control By-Law to prohibit smoking in all 224 parks including trails, playgrounds and fields, and 18 kilometres of beaches. They will also seek a similar amendment to the City of Vancouver Health By-Law which will be presented to Council for their approval.
If this is not silly enough our park board admits that they have no idea as to how this will be administered. Some suggest that lifeguards be given the task while others suggest it be the job of park rangers.
On CKNW morning guest host Michael Smith and guest Jim Green worried that local pot smokers might be harrassed with Jim Green hoping that pot smokers not be busted as this would open a whole new kettle of fish.
Last that I checked the possession of Marijuana is a criminal offense albeit a stupid law but how can we arrest cigarette smokers who are consuming a product which is fully legal whilst worrying about others who are in fact committing a crime.
Lets get serious guys,
